My son and I attended a private party at Brittlebank Pool this week. As a former life guard, I was ashamed and appalled. There were 4 guards working with 3 of them on the stands at a time. One guard in chair was spraying another with the water hose for several minutes keeping both of them from observing the people in the pool. One guard chair was not equipped with a rescue tube. The other 2 guard chairs had tubes but they were stuck under the chair. Life guards are supposed to wear the strap attached to the tube and hold the rescue tube in front of them so they are prepared for an emergency. When guards changed shifts, the new guard is supposed to observe the swimmers while the old guard gets down, then the old guard observes as the new guard takes position and then the new guard observes throughout the shift. I never saw this happen at shift changes every 15 minutes throughout the two hour party. Then there was just the lack of scanning the swimmers and pool constantly for safety and emergencies - they spent more time looking away from the pool than at the pool.
In light of recent events at Burdette Pool (drowning), you would think the guards would have tried to watch more. Please, train your guards to be more observant and diligent!
